Things to do in Coalville: Reservoirs, the Weber River and a Rail Trail
A plain guide to Coalville, Utah: Echo and Rockport state parks, the Weber River and the Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail.

Coalville is the county seat of Summit County, Utah, in a valley where Chalk Creek meets the Weber River. About 1,500 people lived here at the 2020 census. The town first went by the name Chalk Creek. It was renamed after coal was found nearby in 1858, and it was founded in 1859. It sits on Interstate 80 at about 5,850 feet.
The town is small and the draw is the water and open land around it. The one public building we could confirm from an official page is the county courthouse, so most of this guide is built around the parks near the town.
The Summit County Courthouse
The Summit County Courthouse stands on Main Street. It is the third courthouse the county has had. The first seat was in Wanship, then Coalville, and this building went up between 1903 and 1904. It is a solid stone building in the Richardson Romanesque style, with towers, arched entrances and round-topped windows. The stone was quarried by one of the builders, J. H. Salmon, who was from Coalville.
The building has had a rough life. A big update in 1980 added dropped ceilings and aluminum windows. During restoration work in the 1990s, crews found the original pressed-metal ceilings hidden under acoustic tile. The courthouse was brought back to its old look and still serves the county today. It is worth a look from the street if you are passing through town.
Echo State Park
Echo Reservoir was built by the Bureau of Reclamation in the 1930s to irrigate farmland. The Weber River flows north into it from the Coalville valley. Echo State Park sits on its shore, near Coalville and just off Interstate 80. The park has camping, boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming and picnicking, and ice fishing in winter. There are boat docks and launches, and the park has beach access. On land you will find picnic tables, grills, pavilion sites and a ranger station, and the campgrounds range from tent pads to RV sites. Local people from Coalville began running recreation at the reservoir by the late 1960s, before it became a state park.
The park lies near Echo Canyon, which the Mormon Pioneer Trail and the California Trail both passed through. It is a nice spot to think about those long journeys while looking at the water. The Weber River nearby is known for good fishing.
Rockport State Park
Rockport State Park is on Rockport Reservoir near Peoa. People fish for trout and bass, boat, camp, hike, bike and kayak. There are more than 100 campsites spread over five campgrounds, some developed and some primitive, plus a historic old church on the grounds. The boat launch has floating docks, and you can rent boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. Summer brings waterskiing and wakeboarding. The park also has an archery range with life-sized animal targets. It is an International Dark Sky Park, so it suits a night under the stars. In winter, ice fishing and snowmobile trails are close.
The Rail Trail
The Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail passes right through Coalville. It runs nearly 30 miles from the mountains near Park City to Echo Reservoir, along the Weber River, passing Wanship, Coalville and Echo. It drops from about 6,900 feet near the start to about 5,280 feet at the reservoir, so it is a gentle downhill if you ride toward Echo. The route began as a narrow-gauge coal railway in the 1870s. Union Pacific gave it up in 1989, and it opened as a state park in 1992. Utah calls it the state's first non-motorized rail trail.
People bike, hike, ride horses and cross-country ski on it. Some stretches are paved and some are dirt or gravel, so bring the right bike.
For families
Echo has a beach, picnic spots and water, which makes it the easy pick for children. A short ride on the rail trail near town works for beginners.
When the weather turns
Besides a look at the courthouse, we found no indoor public sights in Coalville that we could confirm. Park City, with its museums, is the nearest larger town for a wet day.
Getting around
You will need a car. Interstate 80 runs by the town, and both state parks are a short drive. The rail trail gives cyclists a car-free way to link Coalville to the reservoirs.
Good to know
Snow is heavy here, with a typical year bringing over five feet. Plan winter trips with care.
Dogs, boating and swimming rules differ by park. Check each state park page.
Water level and weather change what you can do. Check before you go.
